A grant program funded by federal and private money is available to help community-based groups carry out wetland and stream preservation projects.

No person or group applied for 2008 grants in the four-state Kansas City region, which surprised federal officials, said Jason Daniels, EPA Region 7 environmental scientist.

Most of the grants range from $10,000 to $20,000, he said. But preference is given to proposals in which a private group can partner with business or state and county agencies that also will provide expertise, equipment, labor or money.

“The grants are competitive; not every application gets funded,” Daniels said. “It’s important for them to have a partner, someone who can provide things like in-kind services or equipment.”

Small-scale community groups, such as high school clubs and neighborhood associations, are among those who have received grants in the past.

“What’s great about these grants is that anyone can apply,” Daniels said.
